Essay Subject

Please write an essay in which you describe your vision of society in 2050, including a description of your own role and place in the society of the future. Your essay must describe which subjects you imagine that you have studied at university in order to fulfill your vision. Your essay should adopt a global, rather than a local, point of view. Emphasis should be placed on your description of life in the year 2050. In your essay you may include one or more of the following topics:
  • Climate and landscape
  • Demography
  • Traffic patterns
  • Production of food
  • Quality of life
  • Patterns of family life
  • Living accommodations
  • Production of energy
  • Business structures
  • Innovative technology
The finished essay must be between 3-5 standard pages i.e. 1,300 letters per page, excluding footnotes, illustrations, references and appendices. The essay must be written in English and must include an abstract of max. 10 lines. A line spacing of 1.5 is required.

Assessment

In the assessment of the essays emphasis will be placed on the following:
  • Visionary aspects rather than on long lists of data
  • Creativity, knowledge and well-balanced argumentation
  • That essays are written in easily comprehensible English and that they have a clear structure as well as relevant documentation.
  • Emphasis will not be placed on absolute linguistic precision, but on text that can be read and understood by a young, English-speaking individual.

Participation and Submission

You can participate in this competition if you are born between November 1, 1987 and November 1, 1993. Date of birth and contact details (email, phone number) must be included in the essay. Group submissions of up to three participants will be accepted. Submit the essay here before November 25, 2009. All participants will be notified by December 1, 2009 at the latest.
